Opinion Piece: Same Old Jets, or is our Depth a Positive sign?

Mike Justiniano

Whilst the start of the season was not ideal, watching the Jets during the preseason has brought on quite a few interesting thoughts recently. Good ones to be sure, and to be honest it got me thinking. To say the least, it’s certainly something that while some friends of mine always seem to say, here we go, it’s just the same old Jets, I’m starting to see things a little bit differently. To be fair, the media does a great job of doing the same thing. Since we have added so much talent over the past couple of seasons, I have a hard time thinking or even believing that it’s the same old Jets.

For me, I see a team who finally has strong depth throughout the roster, so much so that other teams gauged our preseason cuts to the tune of 7 players. SEVEN Players that we could not find a good home for on our team that were able to not only be claimed by other teams in the NFL but some who might actually take on some prominent roles for them. That in itself should be an indication on what kind of turn this team and franchise has taken under the helm of Joe Douglas.

It turns out that the Jets plan to forgo wins and competitive balance and play the young guys the past few years may have helped our depth issues from the past. It has shown me that when you create competition at the positional level, that you create men who can showcase different styles and abilities. Thus, allowing the coaches and even some of us savvy fans the chance to see and even tell what players can do or will do when given a chance to showcase their abilities.

These are the times when players can show flashes of their potential out on the field. Guys who have special traits or skill sets that you learn to appreciate and love. Those highlight moments, splash plays or even play execution that creates a buzz and excitement around certain guys that us fans clamor for. I can name a few guys who have been generating some buzz so far this year including Will Parks, Lawrence Cager, Tanzel Smart, Jonathan Marshall and Zonovan “Bam” Knight just to name a few.

What these guys have brought to the fan base is excitement. Something that we’ve had but not to the extent that we have now. Shoot some of those guys are even teetering back and forth on the practice squad now. So I’m looking forward to learning how it all plays out just like all of you. Until that time however, I can finally say that the Depth that we do have on this team is finally a positive sign. We have players that we get to look forward to with the hope they contribute to our success moving forward. Something we haven’t had in a very long time.
